A free geography game for students

geo-routr turns the world map into a puzzle students actually want to solve: connect two countries by naming the neighbours in between.

Why it works in class

  • Neighbours, not just capitals: every route is a lesson in which countries border which.
  • Instant feedback: each guess is coloured by how close it is to a shortest route, so students correct themselves.
  • Hints that teach: first the next country’s outline, then every border, then first letters.
  • Short: a route takes a few minutes, perfect as a warm-up or an exit ticket.

Easy to set up

  • Free, with no sign-up and no student accounts or emails.
  • Runs in any modern browser: Chromebooks, tablets, phones and laptops.
  • Nothing to install, or add it to the home screen like an app.

Ideas for lessons

  1. Daily warm-up: put today’s route on the board and solve it together.
  2. Race in pairs on a Practice route, then compare who found the shortest way.
  3. Region focus: after the daily, open Learn and explore the region on a labelled globe.
  4. Discussion: why do routes cross some seas but go around others? Short crossings count; oceans don’t.

Privacy

No names, emails or accounts. Progress stays on the device; only an anonymous daily score is sent, for the “how did others do” comparison.
